Session Details
Session 1
Introduction to Boundaries

In the first week of Building Better Boundaries, participants are introduced to the concept of personal boundaries. Participants discuss what they are, why they are essential, and the various
types of boundaries. Participants consider the idea that personal boundaries stem from a sense of self-love and understanding of one’s values. Participants will explore ways to acknowledge our worthiness and human rights to set the foundation for learning how boundaries work.

Objectives

  • Participants will discuss why we set boundaries and the positive impact effective personal boundaries can have on their overall health and well-being.

  • Participants will recognize the role self-worth and self-love play in how they approach
    boundaries.

  • Participants will evaluate where they are at when it comes to understanding their own
    boundary beliefs.

  • Participants will begin to consider their rights and how to say no to requests.
Session 2
Understanding my Boundaries

In the second session of Building Better Boundaries, participants will build awareness around the types of boundaries they have and consider the consequences of having boundaries that are either too weak or too rigid, as well as the benefits of having flexible boundaries. Participants also review the barriers they have in setting boundaries. We begin to examine ways to have effective boundaries by getting in tune with our “gut” feelings and explore scenarios that may alert us that a boundary may have been crossed.

Objectives

  • Participants will learn the impacts too weak or too rigid boundaries can have on a person’s well-being and the benefits of having flexible boundaries.

  • Participants will determine the barriers they may face in setting and maintaining boundaries.

  • Participants will consider the importance of their “gut” feelings (instincts) and how to tune in to what their body is saying.
Session 3
Articulating my Boundaries to Others

In the third session of Building Better Boundaries, participants will learn to identify their feelings and connect them to a need so that we can communicate our needs to others. Participants learn and practice the concepts from the Non-Violent Communication (NVC) system of communicating with others. Building on understanding how to identify feelings and needs and how they are connected, participants learn how to make factual observations and healthy requests of others.

Objectives

  • Participants will learn the 4 steps of the NVC system (OFNR – Observations, Feelings, Needs, and Requests).

  • Participants will practice setting boundaries by working through scenarios.

  • Participants will consider ways to keep the conversation going when our boundary setting and request-making results in a “no.”
Session 4
Saying Yes to Myself

The final session of Building Better Boundaries is all about saying yes to yourself. In this session, participants are allowed to get in touch with their personal values and consider ways to honour those values in their lives. Participants consider the importance of compassion for self and others in this learning process. Participants will learn the 4 stages of learning as a reminder to be kind to ourselves (and others) while we build on our new skill of boundary setting.

Objectives

  • Participants will clarify their personal values and the ways they intend to honour those values as a priority in their life.

  • Participants will discuss the importance of compassion for self and others while learning a new skill.

  • Participants will learn about the stages required to learn a new skill, such as boundary setting.
